Award Size Guide: How Big Should Your Custom Award Be?
Most desk-display recognition awards run 6–8" tall. Hero pieces and retirement plaques work best at 10–12". Above 12" reads as ceremonial and is reserved for one-off milestones. The right size depends on display location, inscription length, and the moment being recognized.
Sizes at a glance
6–7" — Desk display recognition. Sits on a recipient's workspace, reads at arm's length. Good for monthly recognition programs, peer awards, and behavioral recognition.
8–9" — Standard corporate recognition. Visible across a room, holds a multi-line inscription comfortably. Good for years-of-service awards, sales achievements, executive milestones.
10–12" — Hero pieces. Substantial enough to anchor a ceremony, holds longer inscriptions (40–70 words). Good for retirement plaques, lifetime achievement, capital-campaign donor recognition.
13" and up — Ceremonial. Reserved for once-in-a-decade moments — major institutional dedications, championship trophies that pass between recipients annually, signature event awards.
How size affects inscription length
Engraving area scales with overall size but not linearly. A 6" piece typically holds 15–25 words of inscription comfortably before crowding. An 8" piece comfortably holds 25–45 words. A 12" piece can carry 50–100 words across multiple stanzas, plus a logo and recipient name.
If your inscription is long (memorial dedication, full year-list for years-of-service, multi-line campaign acknowledgment), size up rather than crowding the engraving. The finished piece will read better and the engraving will last longer without visual fatigue.
Match size to the display location
Desk display (cube farm, workspace) — 6–8". Anything larger competes with the recipient's monitor and other desk items.
Bookshelf or credenza (private office, conference room) — 8–10". Visible to visitors, doesn't dominate.
Trophy case or wall mount (institutional, lobby) — 10–14". Sized to read at distance.
Awards-night display table — match the rest of the program. If you're handing out multi-tier awards, keep all pieces within the same 2–3" size range to signal coherence.
How weight scales with size
Crystal pieces gain weight quickly: a 6" piece is 1–2 lb, a 9" piece is 4–6 lb, a 12" piece is 10–15 lb. For volume programs over 25 units, shipping weight matters — acrylic at the same size weighs ~30% less and ships at a meaningfully lower cost.
